Attached and freestanding carports
Attached
An attached carport ties into the garage or house wall with a ledger, like an attached patio cover, and needs posts only on the outside edge. It is common alongside a garage that is full of storage. Attached structures need a building permit at any size in the City of Sacramento, Sacramento County, Elk Grove and the other cities we cover.
Freestanding
A freestanding carport stands on four or more posts, often over a side-yard RV pad or at the end of a long driveway. With no ledger, it relies entirely on its posts and footings for wind and uplift resistance. See freestanding patio covers for the footing and setback issues, which are the same.
Sizing for cars, trucks and RVs
- Clearance: measure the tallest vehicle, including roof racks, and add room for the beam depth under the roof.
- Width: a single-car carport needs room to open doors on both sides; a double needs a post layout that does not block either bay.
- Drainage: a solid roof sheds a lot of water onto a driveway. Plan where the gutter and downspout discharge.
- Height limits: taller structures can trigger larger setbacks. In Woodland, the interior side and rear setback grows by a foot for every foot of height over 10 ft.
Permits, zoning and the license question
Building departments here regulate carports alongside patio covers. Woodland's patio cover rules expressly include carports, and Rocklin's residential checklist covers patio covers, carports and enclosures together. Expect the same plot plan, setback and engineering requirements as a patio cover, plus a check that the structure stays out of the front setback and any utility easement.
On licensing, the CSLB D-03 awning class excludes carports, so a carport is typically built under a B (General Building) license or another class that covers it. Verify any license at cslb.ca.gov. Because a carport needs a permit, California's $1,000 minor-work exemption does not apply.
What drives carport cost
Carport pricing for the Sacramento area was not confirmed from a cost guide for this page, so no range is listed here. The same drivers as a solid aluminum cover apply: footprint, roof type (lattice, solid or insulated), post count, height, attachment and whether lights or an outlet are added. Get a written quote that names the product, the pan gauge and the span it is rated for. For comparison, solid aluminum patio covers typically run $20 to $50 per sq ft installed; see aluminum patio covers.
