Pergolas, wood covers and freestanding shade
Average highs climb from about 53°F in January to about 94°F in July, with August nearly as hot, and snowfall is almost nonexistent. That makes summer shade the main job, with winter rain the second.
Wood covers and pergolas
Wood suits the town's older homes and garden settings. Custom pergolas typically run $30 to $65 per sq ft installed, and a solid-roofed wood cover sheds rain where a pergola cannot. See pergolas and wood patio covers.
Freestanding covers on larger lots
Where the seating area sits away from the house, a freestanding aluminum or louvered cover avoids roof work. Posts and footings carry all the wind load. See freestanding patio covers.
Town of Loomis building permits
- The Building Department is at Town Hall, 3665 Taylor Road, and is closed to the public on Fridays.
- Permit applications go in by email to bldgpermit@loomis.ca.gov; larger file sets are sent as a share link.
- Projects submitted after January 1, 2026 are reviewed under the 2025 California building codes.
- The town's adopted construction codes include the residential code's patio cover appendix (Appendix AH).
- Attached covers, wiring and detached structures over 120 sq ft should be expected to need a permit; confirm small detached projects with the department.
These items come from the town's permit pages and code summaries; confirm current submittal requirements with the department before plans are drawn. Patio covers in neighboring Rocklin need an ICC report for manufactured systems, and Granite Bay falls under Placer County.
Creeks, slopes and drainage
Antelope Creek and Secret Ravine drain the town, and many lots slope. Plan where the cover's gutter and downspouts discharge so runoff does not run toward the house, a neighbor or a creek bank, and expect taller posts on the downhill side.
